In this review we take a look at Paris Christou’s course on how to draw a cartoon pinup.
Recently updated to version 3, you get two courses in one with this very affordable series of lessons as Version 2 is also included!
Paris is a Disney animator that has a series of online art courses teaching how to draw this stunning pin-up character called Cherry.
Paris uses Autodesk’s Sketchbook software while drawing Cherry for this course. If you want to follow along with the same software, good news. Sketchbook is free to download.
If you don’t have a Pen tablet for your PC, no problem. It is just as easy to follow along using a pencil and paper.
What you will learn
The lessons jump right into drawing the different head shapes for any position, laying out the sketch by drawing circles so the proportion is correct every time. Once you are comfortable with being able to sketch the head in every position, then we move on to drawing facial features such as eyes, nose and mouth.
Hairstyles are a big part of character development, 5 lessons and over 30 mins of tuition is dedicated to ways to approach this area, we loved the way Paris teaches, his style is relaxed, friendly and easy to follow.
Once the head, face and hair techniques have been covered, the course moves on to expressions and how to make Cherry communicate with her face. This section spans over 9 lessons and over an hours worth of instruction.
Next up is a series of lessons that cover the legs, arms and torso of Cherry, a strong focus on nailing the correct proportions so our character looks good. This section lasts 45 minutes and we felt we were confident in drawing her body after working through the lessons twice. As art needs practice to master, we enjoyed retaking many parts of this course and using some lessons as a reference to return to often.
Every artist has struggled drawing hands and feet at some point in their journey. Lucky Paris goes into great detail on how to master drawing these parts of the human body, This section of the course is over 90 minutes long and spread over 11 lessons.
Version 3 of this course finishes with 17 lessons of drawing poses, now we have all the techniques we need to create the head, face, body, hands and feet we study how to position them to be able to create and pose we want.
The older version is free with this course
But that’s not all, included with this course is the older version.
In case you are left wanting more (We were not, this course is very in-depth) Paris has included the older version of this course absolutely free when you buy the latest version.
But does he teach it well?
Paris is very engaging and instantly likeable, his relaxed, knowledgeable style of teaching is fun to watch and easy to learn from. He is clearly a very skilled artist and a talented teacher. We found ourselves coming back a rewatching each lesson again, not because we didn’t learn the first time, but because Paris makes it so fun.
Conclusion
With hours upon hours of lessons, great teaching style and lots of handouts of each lesson that we can use as a reference when drawing Cherry, we can’t fault this course. In fact, we would say that it is our favourite art course we have taken so far. The price of $37 makes it extremely affordable so there is no reason not to pick this art course up and learn how to draw Cherry today.
